The Faculty of Theology and Religion, in association with St John’s College, proposes to appoint to a University Lecturership in Old Testament Studies. The post of University Lecturer is the main career grade for academic faculty at Oxford and is equivalent to a North American associate professorship. The lecturer will be a member of the Faculty of Theology and Religion and will also hold a Tutorial Fellowship at St John’s College.
The successful candidate will be an outstanding scholar whose expertise lies within the broad field of Old Testament Studies. He or she will have a record of world class research and publication in some aspect of Old Testament Studies and wide experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate students.
The lecturer will undertake research and scholarship in Old Testament Studies, teach for undergraduate programmes in Theology and Religion, Philosophy and Theology, and Theology and Oriental Studies, and supervise Master’s and Doctoral students in Theology and Religion. As a Tutorial Fellow at St John’s, he or she will take overall responsibility for the direction of the studies of those undergraduate students in the college who are associated with the Faculty of Theology and Religion.
The successful candidate will hold a doctorate in any field relating to Old Testament Studies; will have a strong record of research and publication at an international level and a record of success in securing research funding. The ability to deliver effective class and small-group (tutorial) teaching to high-achieving and challenging students and to supervise graduate students for the faculty are essential. The postholder will require excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills.
The post is tenable from 1 October 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter.
